About the Property
Dr. Wilkinson's Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs has been on Lincoln Avenue, in the middle of downtown Calistoga, since 1952, when Jon "Doc" Wilkinson and his wife, Edy, opened it. Doc's original mud bath recipe is still used at the spa. Rooms range from kings and family bunk rooms to cottages, including a restored 1924 Victorian house that sleeps a large group.
There are three geothermal mineral pools, one indoor and two outdoor, including an adults-only hot spring pool. The Works, a volcanic-ash mud bath, is the spa's signature. House of Better serves all day, and The Backyard has fire pits, hammocks and tree swings. Bikes are complimentary, and the resort is pet-friendly.
It is also an easy place to start a wine tour. Fisher Vineyards, Envy Wines and Sterling Vineyards are all within about 5 minutes, and St. Helena is about 15 minutes south. We are based in Calistoga ourselves, a few minutes away.
Getting Here From the Airport
Sonoma County Airport (STS): about 19 miles, 40 minutes. The closest airport to Dr. Wilkinson's and the easiest arrival: a short drive over the hills from Santa Rosa, with no Bay Area traffic. Direct flights come in from Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Phoenix, Denver, Dallas and more.
San Francisco International (SFO): about 86 miles, 1 hour 45 minutes, and 2 hours or more at busy times. The most flights, with the longest drive, across the Bay Area and up through Napa Valley.
Oakland (OAK): about 78 miles, 1 hour 35 minutes. Often a quieter airport than SFO, and a slightly shorter drive.
Sacramento (SMF): about 91 miles, around 2 hours. Skips Bay Area traffic entirely, though it is the longest drive of the four.

About 10 minutes away. Up the wooded slopes of Diamond Mountain to the historic caves where Schramsberg ages its traditional-method sparkling wine. The cave tour with a tasting runs about an hour, about $100. By appointment.
11:40 · Lunch at V. Sattui Winery
About 15 minutes away. Sandwiches, cheeses and salads from the Italian deli, eaten at the picnic tables under the trees. Add a tasting from $45 if you like.
1:00 · Heitz Cellar
About 5 minutes away. One of the founding Cabernet houses of Napa Valley, known for its Martha's Vineyard bottling. Tastings at The Salon are $75 to $125, and walk-ins are welcome when there is room.
2:25 · Larkmead Vineyards
About 15 minutes away. One of the valley's oldest family estates, with Cabernet Sauvignon from its own vineyard on the valley floor between Calistoga and St. Helena. The salon tasting is $90. By appointment.

About 10 minutes away. Back by 4:00 p.m., six hours after pickup.
