About the Winery

Clos Pegase was founded by the art collectors Jan and Mitsuko Shrem, who held a design competition for the winery in 1984. It drew 96 entries, and the architect Michael Graves won with a bold postmodern building that the New York Times called a place of pilgrimage.

After years under corporate ownership, the winery was bought in 2024 by Jay and Tammi Adair of Adair Family Wines. They restored it, bringing back the original colors, replanting 52 cypress trees and adding a gallery with a working artist's studio, and reopened it in 2026, with a grand opening in June.

The wines come from estate vineyards in Calistoga and Carneros and are aged in 20,000 square feet of hillside caves. Art is still at the heart of the visit, from the label, which uses an 1890 painting by Odilon Redon, to the fountains and sculpture on the grounds.

Tasting Fees

$50 for the Signature Tasting, a seated flight, about 90 minutes. $75 for the Pegase Collection with cheese and charcuterie. $90 for the Art of Wine tour through the vineyards, gallery and gardens, about 65 minutes.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
