Vittorio Sattui came to San Francisco from Genoa, Italy, in 1882 and began making wine three years later. The family business ran for 35 years until Prohibition closed it in 1920. In 1975 his great-grandson Dario Sattui re-established it in Napa Valley, and the St. Helena winery opened on March 4, 1976. Dario later built Castello di Amorosa in Calistoga.
V. Sattui sells its wines only directly, at the winery and online, so most bottles are hard to find anywhere else. The range is wide, from Moscato and V Rouge to Zinfandel, Madeira and estate Cabernet Sauvignon from the 34-acre Vittorio's Vineyard in the St. Helena AVA, farmed organically. The winery has been named Winery of the Year at the California State Fair and the Critics Challenge.
The visit is relaxed and social. You can taste at the Mercato bar, in a shaded grove over the vineyard, or on the terrace of the stone winery built in 1984. The Mercato del Gusto deli sells sandwiches, cheeses and charcuterie for its 2.5 acres of picnic grounds, though outside food and wine are not allowed on the property.
A complimentary Three Wine Flight Tuesday to Thursday. $45 for the Mercato Tasting, $55 for the Premier Outdoor Tasting or the Terrace Tasting (Friday to Sunday) and $60 for the Reserve Tower Tasting (Friday to Sunday), each about an hour. $75 for the Tour & Tasting ($25 for ages 2 to 20) and $99 for the Wine & Food Pairing (Friday to Sunday), each about 90 minutes.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
