The Venge family has farmed wine grapes in Napa Valley for more than half a century. In 1976 Nils and Dianna Venge bought a 17-acre Oakville vineyard next to Groth and started Saddleback Cellars, the same year their son Kirk was born. As winemaker at Groth, Nils made the 1985 Groth Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, the first California Cabernet to earn 100 points from critic Robert Parker.
Kirk earned his degree in viticulture and enology at UC Davis in 1999 and took over winemaking from his father that year. In 2008 he bought the Venge Vineyards brand and, with help from his mother, Candy, ten acres on the eastern bench of the Calistoga AVA, then built a winery there, with the first harvest in 2010. The estate Bone Ash Vineyard is named for the pale volcanic ash that dusts up from its soils as they dry. Kirk also consults for other brands.
The winery sits in the eastern foothills of the Palisades on the Silverado Trail, a few minutes south of downtown Calistoga. Tastings are seated and individually hosted, looking out over the estate vineyard. Expect small-production Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate and from vineyards around the valley, along with wines such as the Scout's Honor red blend.
$45 per person for the hosted, seated tasting overlooking the estate vineyard.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
