Joe and Alice Heitz founded Heitz Cellar in 1961. In 1966 they bottled the first Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley's first vineyard-designated Cabernet, and the 1968 vintage became one of the most celebrated American wines of its time.
The 1970 Martha's Vineyard was poured at the 1976 Judgment of Paris. Since 2018 Heitz has been owned by the Lawrence family, and all of its vineyards are certified organic.
Guests taste at The Salon on Highway 29, just south of town, or by reservation at the Home Ranch on Taplin Road. The wines are age-worthy, single-vineyard Cabernets from across the valley, making Heitz a must for Cabernet lovers.
$75 for the Napa Valley Legacy tasting at The Salon, 45 to 60 minutes, and $125 for the Single-Vineyard Legacy, 60 to 90 minutes. Home Ranch tastings are $150 to $300, 90 to 120 minutes. One tasting fee is refunded for every three bottles purchased.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
