Winemaker Nils Venge and vintner Mark Carter founded Envy in 2006 on a 17-acre estate on Tubbs Lane, at the top of Napa Valley. Carter built his name in hospitality with the Carter House Victorian, Hotel Carter and Restaurant 301, whose cellar has held the Wine Spectator Grand Award since 1998.
Venge was the first winemaker to earn a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker on a domestic wine, and the pair set out to make the best Napa Cabernet they could. Today Envy makes about 2,500 cases a year of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Merlot, plus whites such as Sauvignon Blanc and a rare Napa Chenin Blanc.
The visit is relaxed. You sit on the terrace or in the tasting room and taste through the current releases, with views toward Old Faithful Geyser next door, and families are welcome on the grounds. The estate is open Thursday through Monday, and the $35 tasting fee is waived with the purchase of two bottles.
$35 per person for the tasting of current releases, waived with the purchase of two bottles. The fee is paid at the winery; a $1 per guest deposit holds the reservation.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

All ages are welcome on the estate; tastings are for guests 21 and over. Parties of nine or more contact the winery to arrange a visit. Walk-ins are welcome to buy bottles to enjoy on the estate.
Pickup at 10:15 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Solage or Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley. Envy books tastings on the hour and half hour, so a 10:15 pickup puts you on the terrace for a 10:30 start.
Stay close and the tasting starts right away. Solage, an Auberge spa resort with geothermal pools on the Silverado Trail, is about 8 minutes from Envy, and Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley, which has its own working winery, is about 10 minutes away. Envy's tasting slots start on the hour and half hour, so we pick up at 10:15 for a 10:30 tasting. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
The tasting of current releases ($35, waived with two bottles), on the terrace with views toward Old Faithful Geyser. We allow about an hour.
About 6 minutes away. A family-owned winery in the foothills of the Palisades, where winemaker Kirk Venge makes limited-production Cabernet Sauvignon. Hosted tastings overlooking the 12-acre estate vineyard are $45, and we allow about an hour. By reservation; parties larger than six call the winery.
About 8 minutes away. Lunch at Sam's Social Club at Indian Springs in downtown Calistoga, with lunch Monday to Friday and brunch until 2:30 p.m. on weekends. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 10 minutes away. A 90-minute walk through organically farmed hillside vineyards and 130-year-old caves, followed by a tasting of the current wines. $50 per person, waived with a two-bottle purchase. By appointment, Monday to Saturday.
Back by about 4:00 p.m., within six hours of pickup.
Adds about an hour. A garden courtyard tasting room on Lincoln Avenue in downtown Calistoga, home of Sempre Vive wines. Walk-ins are welcome as space permits for parties of fewer than six; the tasting is $30, waived with a two-bottle purchase. Open daily from noon; last tasting at 5 p.m.
About $130 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
Envy is open Thursday through Monday. Storybook Mountain is closed on Sundays, so on a Sunday we swap in another Calistoga winery for the afternoon.
