Napa Valley Railway Inn opened in 1981 on the original tracks of the Napa Valley Railroad, which reached Yountville in 1868. Its rooms are in restored railcars and cabooses, each with a private patio, plus a two-bedroom Station House Suite.
It sits in the center of Washington Street, next to V Marketplace, with a Model Bakery café in a caboose on site. More than 20 restaurants and about a dozen tasting rooms are within walking distance.
It is also an easy place to start a wine tour. Chandon, Opus One Winery and Turnbull Wine Cellars are all within about 10 minutes, and St. Helena is about 15 minutes north. We are based in Calistoga, at the north end of the valley.
Sonoma County Airport (STS): about 36 miles, 60 minutes. The closest airport to Napa Valley Railway Inn and the easiest arrival: a short drive over the hills from Santa Rosa, with no Bay Area traffic. Direct flights come in from Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Phoenix, Denver, Dallas and more.
San Francisco International (SFO): about 68 miles, 1 hour 30 minutes, and 2 hours or more at busy times. The most flights, with the longest drive, across the Bay Area and up through Napa Valley.
Oakland (OAK): about 60 miles, 1 hour 20 minutes. Often a quieter airport than SFO, and a slightly shorter drive.
Sacramento (SMF): about 73 miles, about 1 hour 35 minutes. Skips Bay Area traffic entirely, though it is the longest drive of the four.
Flying private? We also meet guests at the FBOs at STS and Napa County Airport (APC). See our Sonoma County Airport car service page for more on flying into STS.

About 25 minutes away. Burgers, fish tacos and salads at St. Helena's classic roadside stand, with picnic tables on the lawn. Quick and casual, which leaves more time for wine. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 5 minutes away. One of the founding Cabernet houses of Napa Valley, known for its Martha's Vineyard bottling. Tastings at The Salon are $75 to $125, and walk-ins are welcome when there is room.

Adds about an hour. Cain's Spring Mountain Cabernet blends, poured at The Yount Room on Washington Street, a short walk from the hotel. The Winery Focus flight is $50.
Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
