Turnbull's first vintage was 1979, when William Turnbull and Reverdy Johnson ran the Johnson-Turnbull Winery on a small Home Ranch in Oakville. Turnbull, a noted architect, designed the winery building. In 1993 Patrick O'Dell, who came to wine from the newspaper business, bought the winery and renamed it Turnbull Wine Cellars. He still owns it today, and Peter Heitz is the winemaker.
Every Turnbull wine is estate grown. The winery farms four vineyards with more than 150 acres of vines: the Home Ranch beside the winery at the northern edge of the Oakville AVA, Fortuna and Leopoldina (formerly the Weitz Vineyard) in Oakville, and Amoenus in Calistoga. Fortuna was first planted in the 1890s, and Leopoldina is where the prized Goddess clone of Cabernet Franc originated.
Visits happen in small tasting spaces set among the gardens and estate vines along Highway 29. The Gallery Tasting pours four current releases, all sold only at the winery, beside a rotating private photography collection, at the Gallery Bar or out in the Gallery Garden. Private seated tastings add a tour of the winery and vineyard, and The Terroir Experience adds barrel samples and food pairings.
$65 for the Gallery Tasting, four current releases at your own pace. $110 for the Private Estate Tasting, 2 hours with a winery and vineyard tour. $175 for The Terroir Experience, 2.5 hours with barrel samples and food pairings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
