Oakville · Napa Valley
The joint venture of Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.
Book a Six-Hour Wine Tour
Opus One began in 1978, when Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Bordeaux and Robert Mondavi of Napa Valley agreed to make a single wine together. The first vintage was 1979, and today the winery remains a union of the two families.
The winery itself, designed by the architecture firm Johnson Fain, was completed in 1991 and is one of the landmarks of Highway 29, set partly into the earth among the vines. Opus One was the first winery to earn both Napa Green Winery and Napa Green Vineyard certification.
There is only one wine here, a Bordeaux-style blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon from four parcels in western Oakville, including part of the To Kalon Vineyard, alongside a second wine, Overture. A visit is polished, calm and quietly grand.
$150 for the estate tasting of two Opus One vintages and Overture, about an hour. $250 for the Opus One Experience with a tour, library wines and food pairing, about 90 minutes.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

The estate tasting, about an hour ($150). The 90-minute Opus One Experience ($250) adds a tour and food pairing and moves the rest of the day back by half an hour.
About 2 minutes away. Single-vineyard, single-varietal wines tasted at a restored farmstead with an 1884 Victorian farmhouse. The Uncork & Unwind tasting is about an hour ($75); longer tastings are $115 to $150. By reservation, 21 and over.

Adds about an hour. Founded by Mike Grgich, the winemaker behind the Chardonnay that won the 1976 Judgment of Paris. Walk-ins are always welcome for wine by the glass or bottle on the garden patio; open until 4:30 p.m.
About $325 to $500 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. The fourth stop is there if the day allows.
