About the Winery

Jerry and Joyce Cain bought land on Spring Mountain in 1980, part of the historic McCormick Ranch. The first crush at their new winery, Cain Cellars, came in the fall of 1982. Jim and Nancy Meadlock joined the Cains in 1986 and took sole ownership in 1991. That same year Chris Howell, who had begun consulting in 1990, took over direction of the winery, and he still leads it today.

Cain makes three Cabernet blends, each from its own vineyard sources: Cain Cuvée, Cain Concept from the benchlands, and Cain Five from the estate. Cain Five blends the five classic Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. The ranch covers about 500 acres at the crest of the Spring Mountain District, with about 90 acres of vines between 1,400 and 2,100 feet.

The 2020 Glass Fire burned through the bowl of the Cain Vineyard, taking most of the vines and all of the buildings, so the estate on Spring Mountain was lost and no longer hosts visits. Replanting began that year. Tastings now take place at The Yount Room, a shared tasting room at 6505 Washington Street in Yountville. Its Winery Focus flight can be devoted to Cain, with the wines poured side by side.

Tasting Fees

$50 for the Winery Focus flight at The Yount Room, which can be devoted to Cain's wines poured side by side.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
