Oak Knoll District · Napa Valley
A family estate around Napa Valley's last 19th-century wooden gravity-flow winery, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.
Book a Six-Hour Wine Tour
Eugene and Catherine Trefethen bought the estate in the Oak Knoll District in 1968, and their son John and his wife Janet founded the winery. Three generations on, the family still runs it, and it helped establish the Oak Knoll District as its own appellation.
The heart of the estate is the winery built in 1886 as Eshcol, designed by Hamden McIntyre. The winery calls it the only surviving 19th-century three-level wooden gravity-flow winery in Napa Valley. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and was restored after the 2014 earthquake.
In 1979 a Trefethen Chardonnay was named the best Chardonnay in the world at the Gault-Millau Wine Olympics in Paris. Today the family pours Chardonnay, Riesling and estate Cabernet Sauvignon, from simple flights to seated tastings in The Villa.
$45 for Winery Flights and $60 for Collectible Cabernet, each about an hour. $70 for the Reserve Tasting in The Villa and $85 for the Vineyard Tour and Tasting, each 90 minutes. $110 to $125 for the Legacy Reserve and Taste the Estate tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
