About the Property
The Swiss Hotel is an adobe on Sonoma Plaza built around 1836 to 1840 by Don Salvador Vallejo, brother of General Mariano Vallejo. The Toroni family bought it in 1892, and the same family has run it since 1923, now in its fourth generation.
Its five rooms, two kings and three queens, are all on the second floor with access to the balcony overlooking the Plaza, and the king rooms have private balcony entries. A continental breakfast is included, and hotel guests get priority reservations at the restaurant and historic bar downstairs. Rooms are booked by phone only.
It is also an easy place to start a wine tour. Three Sticks Wines, Bedrock Wine Co. and Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery are all within about 5 minutes. We are based in Calistoga, in neighboring Napa Valley.
Getting Here From the Airport
Sonoma County Airport (STS): about 29 miles, 55 minutes. The closest airport to the Swiss Hotel, and the easiest arrival: a small airport in Santa Rosa with no Bay Area traffic on the drive. Direct flights come in from Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Phoenix, Denver, Dallas and more.
Oakland (OAK): about 60 miles, 1 hour 20 minutes. Often a quieter airport than SFO.
San Francisco International (SFO): about 59 miles, 1 hour 25 minutes, and longer at busy times. The most flights, with a drive across the Bay Area.
Sacramento (SMF): about 73 miles, 1 hour 40 minutes. Skips Bay Area traffic entirely, though it is the longest drive of the four.

About 15 minutes away. French country cooking on the Sonoma Plaza, with a Rhône-focused wine list, cheese and charcuterie, and a garden patio. About 25 minutes away. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on a Carneros hill where San Francisco Bay meets Napa and Sonoma. The Seated Wine Tasting is $60. Book ahead online; closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

About 10 minutes away. Italian varieties from California vineyards, with olive oil at The Olive Press, in Carneros. A Taste of Italy with bread and olive oil is $35 to $50. Reservations recommended; walk-ins welcome.

Adds about an hour. Estate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from a Burgundy-inspired estate founded in 1953, overlooking the Sonoma Valley and San Pablo Bay. The Heritage Tour & Tasting is $90 and runs about 90 minutes. By appointment, weekdays; closed in August and early September.
