About the Winery

Samuele Sebastiani, a stonemason from Tuscany, came to California in 1895 and founded the winery in Sonoma in 1904, after years of quarrying cobblestones in the Sonoma hills for the streets of San Francisco. It was the only winery in Sonoma County to keep operating through Prohibition, making sacramental and medicinal wine. After Samuele's death in 1944, his son August and August's wife, Sylvia, bought the winery and expanded it.

Bill Foley bought Sebastiani in 2008, and it is now part of Foley Family Wines. He cut production, limited yields and replanted the estate vineyards, and the winery now focuses on single-vineyard and sub-appellation wines. The best known is Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon, from a vineyard first planted in 1961.

The winery is a few blocks from the Sonoma Plaza, with a barrel room of antique redwood tanks, original winemaking tools and hand-carved barrels that Earle Brown finished in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Walk-ins are always welcome at the tasting bar, and the seated Cherryblock tasting pours five vintages side by side.

Tasting Fees

$25 for The Family Table, a tasting of five wines at the bar. $120 for Cherryblock Through the Years, a seated vertical of five vintages of Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon. A complimentary taste of three featured wines is poured at the bar daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
