About the Property

The Sonoma Hotel sits directly on Sonoma Plaza, in a building that dates to 1880 and began as a dry goods store and butcher shop. It has operated as a hotel since the 1920s, and its 16 period rooms over three floors are in the Sonoma Plaza National Historic Landmark district.

The restaurant the girl & the fig is on the ground floor, and coffee and tea are set out in the lobby each morning. Many rooms have clawfoot tub and shower combinations. There is no elevator, and only Room 1 on the ground floor is accessible. No pets, except service animals.

It is also an easy place to start a wine tour. Three Sticks Wines, Bedrock Wine Co. and Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery are all within about 5 minutes. We are based in Calistoga, in neighboring Napa Valley.

Getting Here From the Airport

Sonoma County Airport (STS): about 29 miles, 55 minutes. The closest airport to the Sonoma Hotel, and the easiest arrival: a small airport in Santa Rosa with no Bay Area traffic on the drive. Direct flights come in from Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Phoenix, Denver, Dallas and more.

Oakland (OAK): about 60 miles, 1 hour 20 minutes. Often a quieter airport than SFO.

San Francisco International (SFO): about 59 miles, 1 hour 25 minutes, and longer at busy times. The most flights, with a drive across the Bay Area.

Sacramento (SMF): about 73 miles, 1 hour 40 minutes. Skips Bay Area traffic entirely, though it is the longest drive of the four.

About 20 minutes away. Carneros Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from a Mexican-American family winery founded in 1999. The Ceja Wine Tasting Experience is $40. Open Friday to Sunday only, by reservation.

About 10 minutes away. Italian varieties and the Ossidiana red at a hilltop villa above Sonoma Valley and a wetland preserve. The Classic Bar Tasting is $25 and the seated Terrace Tasting $60. Reservations required.

Adds about an hour. Estate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from a Carneros grape-growing family whose vineyards appear on many wineries' labels. The Signature Terrace Tasting & Vineyard Tour is $55 and takes about 90 minutes. Reservations required; closed Tuesday.
