Pablo and Juanita Ceja brought their six children from Mexico to St. Helena in 1967, and the family worked in Napa Valley vineyards. Amelia Morán arrived the same year at 12 and on her first weekend picked grapes at Robert Mondavi's To Kalon vineyard alongside her classmate Pedro Ceja. They married in 1980, and in 1983 Pedro and Amelia, his brother Armando and his parents pooled their savings to buy 15 acres in Carneros.
The family planted 13 acres to Pinot Noir in 1986 and brought in its first harvest in 1988. Pedro, Amelia, Armando and Armando's wife, Martha, founded Ceja Vineyards in 1999 to make Carneros wines, and Amelia became the first Mexican-American woman elected president of a winery. The range runs from Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and the Vino de Casa red blend.
The family's vineyards are private, so visits are at the Sonoma tasting room on Burndale Road, just off Highway 12, which shares its site with the Hanson of Sonoma Distillery. The room is small and cozy, with a private outdoor sitting area and views over the Carneros countryside, and the one-hour tasting pours at least five wines while a host tells the family's story.
$40 for the Ceja Wine Tasting Experience, at least five wines, one hour.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
