Beltane Ranch

About the Property

Beltane Ranch is a working ranch and vineyard in Glen Ellen, founded in 1892 by Mary Ellen Pleasant, an abolitionist and businesswoman. In 1960 the family matriarch, Rosemary, restored the house and opened it as the region's first bed and breakfast, and the family still runs it today. There are five rooms and suites, with private entrances, porches or verandas and views across Sonoma Valley.

The 105-acre preserve has vineyards, olive orchards, heirloom gardens and farm animals, plus a tennis court, hammocks and a fire pit. A chef-prepared breakfast from the ranch is included, and each room has a wine cellar stocked with the estate's wines. Visits are by reservation only.

It is also an easy place to start a wine tour. Loxton Cellars, Laurel Glen Vineyard and Hamel Family Wines are all within about 5 minutes. We are based in Calistoga, in neighboring Napa Valley.

Getting Here From the Airport

Sonoma County Airport (STS): about 22 miles, 40 minutes. The closest airport to Beltane Ranch, and the easiest arrival: a small airport in Santa Rosa with no Bay Area traffic on the drive. Direct flights come in from Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Phoenix, Denver, Dallas and more.

Oakland (OAK): about 64 miles, 1 hour 30 minutes. Often a quieter airport than SFO.

San Francisco International (SFO): about 64 miles, 1 hour 35 minutes, and longer at busy times. The most flights, with a drive across the Bay Area.

Sacramento (SMF): about 80 miles, around 2 hours. Skips Bay Area traffic entirely, though it is the longest drive of the four.

About 20 minutes away. Bordeaux- and Rhône-style wines from Moon Mountain Vineyard, planted on volcanic slopes in 1880. The private Moon Mountain Vineyard experience with a tour, caves and seated tasting is $125, about 90 minutes. By request only.

12:15 · Lunch at Glen Ellen Village Market

About 25 minutes away. The village grocery on Arnold Drive in Glen Ellen, with sandwiches made to order for lunch on the go. Open daily from 6 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

About 10 minutes away. Syrah, Zinfandel and Port from Australian-born winemaker Chris Loxton in Glen Ellen. A tasting flight is $20. Reservations encouraged but not required.

2:40 · Kunde Family Winery

About 10 minutes away. Estate Zinfandel, Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc on a 1,850-acre Kenwood estate with caves. A bar tasting or the daily cave tour is $25. Walk-ins welcome; seated tastings recommended by reservation.

Optional: Hamel Family Wines

Adds about an hour. Cabernet blends from Biodynamic, dry-farmed volcanic vineyards, including Nuns Canyon. The Estate Experience, a tour of the winery and caves and a seated tasting, is $95 and takes about 90 minutes. By reservation only.
