Stuart Sloan built Sloan Estate on 40 acres in the eastern hills of Rutherford, where 13 acres of vines were planted in 1997 between 875 and 990 feet, looking down on the valley floor. The flagship SLOAN Proprietary Red was first made from the 2000 vintage. Wine Spectator later reported that Sloan had sold the estate, without naming the buyer.
The vines grow in fractured volcanic rock, sandy loam and white tufa, with a cool marine influence and plenty of sun. Winemaker Martha McClellan, vineyard manager David Abreu and consulting enologist Michel Rolland lead the team. SLOAN is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and the estate notes that its 2002 and 2007 vintages were rated "a perfect wine." A second wine, ASTERISK, followed with the 2004 vintage.
SLOAN is sold to mailing list members. The list is full, so new buyers sign up for the waiting list and are offered wine in the order they joined. The estate gives only a post office box in Rutherford and publishes no visiting program, so it does not host public visits. The day below takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
