After the Civil War, a land patent signed by President Ulysses S. Grant granted 640 acres to veteran E.J. Church, and the land became Long Meadow Ranch. Vineyards, apple orchards, olives and hay thrived until Prohibition, then the forest took over. Ted and Laddie Hall bought the overgrown property in 1989 and restored it, and the Hall family still runs the ranch and its Farmstead restaurant in St. Helena.
The Halls call their approach Full Circle Farming, and all of their vineyards, more than 150 acres in Napa and Anderson Valleys, are certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers. The Mountain Estate grows 16 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc in the Napa Valley AVA, in the Mayacamas above the Rutherford AVA. Its Prato Lungo olive groves date to the 1870s, which the ranch calls the oldest olive orchards in Napa Valley.
There are two ways to taste. The Mountain Estate Experience is a private 90-minute visit with estate wines, the wine caves, an olive oil tasting and a tour of the olive oil facility, with wide views over the valley. In town, Farmstead at 738 Main Street has a wine bar in a historic farmhouse, with seated wine tastings, wood-fired pizzas and a restaurant next door.
$60 for the Wine Tasting at the Farmstead Wine Bar, 45 to 60 minutes. $95 for the Seasonal Tasting, a seated family-style tasting with seasonal pizzas, 75 to 90 minutes. $125 for the private Mountain Estate Experience, 90 minutes. A $40 bourbon tasting is also offered at Farmstead.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
