About the Winery

Gustavo Gubel, a Los Angeles architect, grew up sneaking sips of his father's Mendoza Cabernet at family barbecues outside Buenos Aires. With his wife Joanne Hoffman he bought a small Calistoga vineyard in 2020, and their inaugural Gubel Cabernet Sauvignon came from the 2021 vintage. Gustavo, the founder and owner, studied enology and viticulture locally after buying the land.

The estate grows Clone 6 Cabernet Sauvignon on volcanic soils in the Calistoga AVA, and the wine spends 20 months in French oak. The Tasting Panel/Somm gave it 94 points. The vineyard was planted in 2000 and is farmed by Ignacio Tejeda, who planted it, and Robbie Meyer makes the wine. The family also offers Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Nebbiolo and an Artist Series.

The estate is private and does not receive visitors. Gubel sells its wine directly through its website and wine club, and takes questions through its contact form. For a day in this corner of Calistoga, we take you to small family estates nearby that do host.

Tasting Fees

2:30 · Varozza Vineyards

About 10 minutes away. A St. Helena family vineyard on Pratt Avenue, with a stone and wood winery building from 1885, where owners Jack and Dianna Varozza host every tasting themselves. The extended seven-wine tasting is $75 (five wines for $50), about 90 minutes. By appointment, Tuesday to Sunday.

4:00 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:15 p.m., about six hours after pickup.

About $210 per person for Robert Craig and Varozza, plus Chateau Boswell's fee, which is confirmed when we book. Fees are paid directly to each winery.

Varozza hosts Tuesday to Sunday. The climb to Robert Craig on Howell Mountain takes about 25 minutes each way, and the day runs about 15 minutes past six hours.
