Richard Thornton Boswell founded Chateau Boswell in 1979 on the Silverado Trail north of St. Helena. His plan was to make small lots of French-style wine and sell it directly to clients. The winery says the Wall Street Journal took note of his "boutique" idea at a time when most Napa wineries sold through distributors. André Tchelistcheff guided its first vintages, and the family still owns it.
RT Boswell focused on Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, made in a hand-hewn stone winery. His wife, Susan Boswell, has run the estate for nearly three decades and added Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from vineyards on the Sonoma Coast, in the Russian River Valley and in Santa Barbara County. Philippe Melka and Keith Hock consult alongside winemaker Allison Nunnikhoven, and each vineyard-designated bottling is under 350 cases.
A visit is by appointment only, and your group is the only one on the property during it. The Napa Valley wines include an estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc blend, a Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet and the RTB Red. In 2007 Chateau Boswell became the first winery certified Napa Green, and the estate vineyards are farmed organically, by hand.
Chateau Boswell does not publish a tasting fee or visit length. Ask about both when the appointment is requested.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

A private appointment at the stone winery, with your group the only one on the property. The winery does not publish a fee or length, so we plan about an hour here.
About 15 minutes away. A small, hands-on Calistoga estate north of town, run by Laura and Michael Swanton, making small lots of Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. A white-based or red-based flight is $25 (waived with two bottles of red), about an hour. By advance reservation, daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; no pets.
About 15 minutes away. Lunch at Farmstead on Main Street in St. Helena, Long Meadow Ranch's farmhouse restaurant, open daily from 11:30 a.m. (11 a.m. on weekends). Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 10 minutes away. A family estate on Big Tree Road, east of downtown St. Helena, focused on Italian varieties such as Sangiovese, Aglianico and Sagrantino. Seated flights on the vine-side patio are $40 to $55, about an hour. By reservation, open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; leashed dogs welcome.
Back by about 3:15 p.m., within six hours of pickup.
Adds about an hour and a half. A dog-friendly winery on Highway 29 with a stone cellar about 150 years old. Walk-ins are welcome daily for the Discovery of Napa tasting ($55, about 1.5 hours); open until 5:30 p.m.
About $65 to $80 per person in tasting fees at Laura Michael Wines and Benessere Vineyards, paid directly to each winery, plus Chateau Boswell's fee, which the winery does not publish.
Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. The fourth stop is there if the day allows.
