About the Winery

Swiss immigrant James Varozza came to St. Helena in 1870 and worked vineyards on Spring Mountain. In 1913 his son Joseph bought the vineyard and winery on Pratt Avenue, a two-story stone and wood building finished in 1885 for its first owner, Emil Zange. After Joseph died in 1946, the family stopped making wine and sold its grapes to local wineries.

The family farms 38 acres in the St. Helena AVA, with seventeen blocks and eight varieties, including some of the valley's oldest Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel vines. The vineyard is dry farmed. In 1999 Jack Varozza, the third generation, started the Varozza label with 250 cases each of estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah. The old head-trained Petite Sirah block is kept for the family's own wine.

In 2013 the family marked 100 years of growing grapes here and began pouring in the seismically renovated old winery. Visits are private and hosted by the owners, Jack and Dianna Varozza. You taste five to seven wines, mostly reds, plus a Sauvignon Blanc and a rosé for much of the year, with water and crackers on the table.

Tasting Fees

$50 for a five-wine tasting and $75 for an extended seven-wine tasting, each a private, owner-hosted visit of about 90 minutes.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
