Safari West is a wildlife preserve in the hills north of Santa Rosa, founded by Peter and Nancy Lang in 1993, where giraffes, zebras, rhinos and hundreds of other animals roam. It is now run by the nonprofit Safari West Zoological Society.
Guests sleep in safari tents imported from Africa and finished on site, each with hardwood floors, a private bathroom and a viewing deck, or in a two-bedroom cottage near Lemur Island. Continental breakfast at the Savannah Café is included, and safari tours run every day.
It is also an easy place to start a wine tour. Hans Fahden Vineyards, Theorem Vineyards and Paradise Ridge Winery are all within about 15 minutes. We are based in Calistoga, about 20 minutes away over the hills.
Sonoma County Airport (STS): about 10 miles, 20 minutes. The closest airport to Safari West, and the easiest arrival: a small airport in Santa Rosa with no Bay Area traffic on the drive. Direct flights come in from Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Phoenix, Denver, Dallas and more.
Oakland (OAK): about 79 miles, 1 hour 55 minutes. Often a quieter airport than SFO.
San Francisco International (SFO): about 79 miles, 2 hours, and longer at busy times. The most flights, with a drive across the Bay Area.
Sacramento (SMF): about 99 miles, 2 hours 15 minutes. Skips Bay Area traffic entirely, though it is the longest drive of the four.
Flying private? We also meet guests at the FBOs at STS and Napa County Airport (APC). See our Sonoma County Airport car service page for more on flying into STS.
