Fountaingrove District · Sonoma County
A family homestead since 1912, with tastings in a cave tunneled into volcanic rock or on a patio over gardens and ponds, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.

Hans and Marie Fahden, natives of Hamburg, Germany, bought this mountain property in 1912 and farmed grapes until Prohibition, when they turned to walnuts and prunes. Sixty years later their grandsons, Antone and Lyall Fahden, brought the land back to vines, and the family, now in its third generation on the estate, still runs it.
Three vineyard blocks, separated by volcanic outcroppings and stands of Douglas fir, were planted to Cabernet Sauvignon from 1982 to 1984, on thin topsoil over solid volcanic tufa that keeps the vines small and the fruit concentrated. The winery was bonded in 1986 and made its first wine in 1987. It makes about 1,500 cases a year, including just 300 cases of its flagship Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, and David Sundberg has been winemaker since 2015.
The setting is the reason to come. The family carved roads, built ponds and tunneled a wine cave into the tufa, and tastings are poured at your table either in the cave or out on the patio overlooking the gardens, ponds and mountains. It sits on Petrified Forest Road, about ten minutes from downtown Calistoga, and the drive up from town is one of our favorites in the area. The winery has hosted guests since 1996 and is also a popular spot for weddings.
$40 for the Classic Tasting of five current releases, served at your table in the cave or on the patio, 60 to 75 minutes. $55 for the Regional Reds Tasting of limited-production Sonoma County reds.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
