About the Winery

Enriquez Estate Wines began almost by accident. Eduardo and Ana Enriquez and their daughter, Cecilia, came from New Jersey for a ski trip to Lake Tahoe, found too little snow, headed for San Francisco instead and, after a few detours, ended up tasting Pinot Noir in Sonoma County. A dinner with a winery owner who also held a real estate license led to a look at a vineyard property in Petaluma, and in June 2011 Cecilia, who had been working at Wells Fargo, moved there to learn farming and winemaking from anyone who would teach her. Eduardo, a physician, liked the science of it, and Ana's family in Mexico works in agriculture.

The family's operations have since moved to Forestville, where Cecilia lives on the 8.5-acre estate on Eastside Road and makes about 1,000 cases a year herself. Four and a half acres are planted to Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, in clones 667, 777, Pisoni, 882 and Pommard 5, on Laniger loam; the vineyard was planted in 2007 on land that was once a dairy farm and a private golf course. The wines are small-batch, estate-grown and made with minimal intervention.

The wines are sold only directly from the family estate, through its online shop and its Wine Family Club. Enriquez does not publish a tasting room, tours or visitor hours; the old milk barn on the property has been turned into a two-bedroom vacation rental, and the family hopes to open its big red barn as an event venue.

9:25 · Pickup at Farmhouse Inn or The Sebastopol Inn

The Sebastopol Inn, in downtown Sebastopol, is about 20 minutes from Black Kite Cellars in Freestone, and Farmhouse Inn, a 25-room country inn among the vineyards and redwoods of Forestville, about 35; we pick up at 9:25 in Forestville and 9:40 in Sebastopol. Since Enriquez Estate Wines does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:00 · Black Kite Cellars

About 20 minutes away. Tom Birdsall and Rebecca Green Birdsall's Pinot Noir and Chardonnay house pours at Jasper House, opened in 2024 as the only tasting room in the historic village of Freestone, with a Living Room and a Dining Room for seated tastings. The Jasper House Experience of six wines is $40, about 90 minutes. By appointment only, with prepaid reservations, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

11:55 · Furthermore Wines

About 25 minutes away. Bob Zeches and Chad Richard's Pinot Noir house on Gravenstein Highway, where Ross Cobb, formerly of Williams Selyem and Flowers, has made the wine since 2019; there is a courtyard bocce court in the shade of a giant sequoia. Tastings are $30, refunded with a two-bottle purchase. Open daily 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; we book ahead.

1:10 · Lunch at Handline

About 15 minutes away. A casual Sebastopol spot, open since 2016, with seasonal food from local farmers and fishermen, served mostly outdoors. Open daily from 11 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:25 · Singer Wine

About 10 minutes away. Stephen Singer, once wine director at Chez Panisse, farms Syrah, Viognier and Tuscan olive trees on his Baker Lane Estate in the Sebastopol hills. The Home & Estate Visit is a private tableside tasting with Stephen, with light fare and the estate olive oil ($85, 60 to 90 minutes); the Studio Visit adds his art studio and a library wine ($100). By appointment, arranged by email; 2-guest minimum.

3:40 · Back to your hotel

Back in Sebastopol by 3:55 p.m., or Forestville by 4:15, less than seven hours after pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Black Kite and Singer are by appointment, with a two-guest minimum at Singer, and we confirm both when we book.

About $155 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
