A private tableside tasting with Stephen Singer, Chez Panisse's former wine director, among Syrah vines and olive trees, with a visit to his art studio, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.
Book a Six-Hour Wine Tour
Stephen Singer has spent more than four decades in food and wine. Early on he developed a deep affinity for Syrah, shaped in part by importer Kermit Lynch's early advocacy for Rhône wines, and he worked as a wine retailer, consultant and restaurateur at Chez Panisse, Table 29 and César, including years as wine director at Chez Panisse. A 1984 visit to Badia a Coltibuono in Chianti convinced him that almost everything tastes better with fruity, expressive olive oil, and he started a small company importing Tuscan oils for Chez Panisse and others before settling in Sonoma as a grower of wine and olives.
The Baker Lane Estate, named for its road, is a cool-climate, west-facing hillside in the Sebastopol hills, planted only to Syrah and Viognier. When it was established in 2002, Sebastopol was barely into its shift from apple orchards to vineyards, and planting Syrah here was a gamble. Six selections of Syrah and one of Viognier are farmed with sustainable, regenerative and organic practices, with viticulturist and winemaker Greg Adams, and the estate's Tuscan olive trees, mostly Frantoio, are hand-harvested and micro-milled in small batches.
A visit here is a private meal-like tasting rather than a bar. On the Home & Estate Visit, Stephen pours the Singer wines tableside alongside light fare and the estate olive oil. The Studio Visit adds a trip upstairs to his on-site art studio to see his paintings, past and present, over a library wine.
$85 per guest for the Home & Estate Visit, a tableside tasting with light fare and estate olive oil. $100 per guest for the Studio Visit (also offered as The Atelier Experience), which adds Stephen's art studio and a library wine.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 9:45 a.m. from The Sebastopol Inn, or 9:25 from Farmhouse Inn in Forestville.
The Sebastopol Inn, in downtown Sebastopol, is about 15 minutes from Singer's Baker Lane Estate, and Farmhouse Inn, a 25-room country inn among the vineyards and redwoods of Forestville, about 35, so from Forestville we leave at 9:25. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
The Home & Estate Visit with Stephen Singer ($85), 60 to 90 minutes, or the Studio Visit ($100) for more time.
About 30 minutes away. Tom Birdsall and Rebecca Green Birdsall's Pinot Noir and Chardonnay house pours at Jasper House, the only tasting room in the historic coastal village of Freestone, with three tasting salons. Tastings of six wines take about 90 minutes; the fee is confirmed when we book. By appointment only.
About 20 minutes away. A casual Sebastopol spot, open since 2016, with seasonal food from local farmers and fishermen, served mostly outdoors. Open daily from 11 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 15 minutes away. Single-vineyard Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon from the West Sonoma Coast, including selections poured only at the winery; Red Car also leads a three-hour forest bathing walk through its vineyard, ending with a tasting ($150, by advance reservation). The tasting fee is confirmed when we book and waived with a two-bottle purchase. Walk-ins welcome; the last tasting begins at 4 p.m.
Back in Sebastopol by 4:05 p.m., or Forestville by 4:10, about six and a half hours after pickup.
Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Singer and Black Kite each run up to 90 minutes, so lunch comes a little later, and Red Car's last tasting starts at 4.
About $85 to $100 per person in tasting fees for Singer, paid directly to the winery; the Black Kite and Red Car tasting fees are to be verified upon reservation.
