Black Kite Cellars

About the Winery

Tom Birdsall and Rebecca Green Birdsall founded Black Kite Cellars in 2003, working with Rebecca's parents, Donald and Maureen Green. The winery began with Kite's Rest, the Green family's 12-acre Pinot Noir vineyard in the cool deep end of Anderson Valley, planted in 1999, and it is named for the black-shouldered kite often seen circling over it.

Black Kite makes single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from small blocks on the West Sonoma Coast, Sonoma Mountain and in Anderson Valley. Its Jasper Freestone Vineyard, established in 2015, grows in Goldridge soils about seven miles from the Pacific, and the Chardonnays are made following the traditions of Meursault in Burgundy.

In 2024 the winery opened Jasper House in Freestone, named for the pioneer Jasper O'Farrell, who once owned the land. It is the only tasting room in the historic village, with a Living Room, a Dining Room and a Loft for seated tastings of six wines.

Tasting Fees

$40 per person for the Jasper House Experience, a seated tasting of six wines. Allow 90 minutes.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
