About the Winery

Ron and Karen Davidowski bought this land in the hills above Soda Canyon in 1993, and Ron's construction background helped build the property's roads and infrastructure. Their son Mark and his wife, Patty, own the Vangone Estate wine brand, which the family calls more than 20 years in the making: its finest expression of Napa Valley from the family's own estate.

The 108-acre property lies in the Atlas Peak AVA, with about 22 acres planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon plus small blocks of Cabernet Franc and Marsanne. Vineyard manager Mario Bazan farms it organically, and it is Napa Green certified. Winemaker Sam Kaplan ages the reds 30 to 36 months in French oak and another year in bottle before release.

Production is about 1,000 cases a year, and current releases include the 2022 Marsanne, the estate Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2023 Block B and Block D Cabernets. The wines are sold on vangoneestate.com, where some listings open after you sign up. Vangone Estate does not publish tours or tastings, so the day below takes you to estates in the same eastern hills that do host.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Silverado Resort or Milliken Creek Inn.

10:00 · Pickup at Silverado Resort or Milliken Creek Inn

Since Vangone Estate does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Silverado Resort, at the foot of Atlas Peak, is about 15 minutes from the first stop up Soda Canyon Road, and Milliken Creek Inn, on the Napa River just off the Silverado Trail, about 20 minutes. The day runs about six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:20 · Guarachi Family Wines

About 15 minutes away. Meadowrock Estate up Soda Canyon Road, where Chilean-born importer Alex Guarachi finished a winery in 2017 and every bottle is estate grown. VIP tastings by private request with at least two days' notice; the fee is confirmed when we book. We allow about 75 minutes.

11:50 · Celani Family Vineyards

About 15 minutes away. A Tuscan-style estate at the foot of the Vaca Mountains with 17 acres of vines and 120 olive trees. The Private Estate Tasting of at least four wines with seasonal nibbles is $88, 60 minutes. By appointment, daily 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

1:00 · Lunch at Bistro Don Giovanni

About 8 minutes away. Lunch at Bistro Don Giovanni, an Italian restaurant among the vineyards on Howard Lane, a valley favorite for more than 30 years, open daily from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:35 · Alta Napa Valley

About 25 minutes away. A 90-plus-acre vineyard high on Atlas Peak whose Cabernet and Merlot have gone to Kongsgaard since 2009, with mountain views from the estate. By appointment or private request; any fee is confirmed when the request is accepted. We allow about an hour.

3:35 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 3:50 p.m., under six hours after pickup.

About $88 per person at Celani Family Vineyards; Guarachi Family Wines and Alta Napa Valley confirm their fees when the visits are booked. Fees are paid directly to each winery.

Guarachi and Alta host by private request, so we send the requests early and suggest other Atlas Peak estates if a date is taken. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
