Napa · Napa Valley
Jonathan and Susan Pey's Oakville-rooted Cabernet, named for a first vintage that tasted like a 'textbook Oakville Cab', with Napa roots and a European soul. TEXTBOOK does not receive visitors; here is what to know, and a day at sought-after estates nearby that do host.

Jonathan Pey founded TEXTBOOK in 2004 with his wife, Susan. Their European upbringing and travels in France and Italy shaped the idea: Napa Valley richness with European restraint, or in their words, 'Napa Roots, European Soul.' When they tasted their first vintage from Oakville fruit, they called it a textbook Oakville Cab, and the name stuck. For years they hand-sold the wine out of the back of their SUV.
The heart of the range is Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced mainly from the Oakville AVA and from partner vineyards elsewhere in Napa Valley, hand picked, sorted and aged in new French oak. Winemaker Abigail Horstman Estrada, who has worked in Italy, New Zealand and Israel and at Markham, Domaine Chandon and Robert Mondavi, keeps lots separate before blending. Robb Report included TEXTBOOK among eight standout Oakville Cabernets in 2023.
Alongside the Napa Valley Collection of Cabernet, Merlot and the Page-Turner red, a Sonoma County Collection adds Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The wines are sold through the winery's online shop, its wine club and retailers. TEXTBOOK lists no tasting room or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors; the day below visits three Oakville and Yountville estates that do.
TEXTBOOK does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Since TEXTBOOK does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Both Yountville hotels are about 5 minutes from HQ Winery on Hoffman Lane, the first stop. The day runs about six and a quarter hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 5 minutes away. Russell Bevan's bold Oakville Cabernet and coastal Pinot Noir, poured at HQ Winery, a working winery on Hoffman Lane just south of Yountville. Tastings are $75 to $200 depending on the experience; we plan about 75 minutes. By appointment, daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
About 8 minutes away. A family's ten-acre Oakville Cabernet vineyard beside its own restaurant, Brix, where four library vintages of the estate Cabernet are poured in the gardens and vines. The Cabernet Vertical is $95, 60 to 90 minutes. By appointment only; closed Monday and Tuesday.
About 20 minutes away. Lunch at Oenotri on First Street in downtown Napa, an Italian restaurant serving lunch daily from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 12 minutes away. Husband-and-wife winemakers Jennifer Williams and Mark Porembski pour a heritage white and Bordeaux-inspired reds in a private tasting at the new Arrow&Branch winery among the vines on Solano Avenue. The Zeitgeist Tasting Experience is $85; we allow about an hour. By reservation.
Back by about 4:20 p.m., about six and a quarter hours after pickup.
About $255 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
Kelleher is closed Monday and Tuesday, so plan this day for Wednesday through Sunday. Back by about 4:20 p.m.
