About the Winery

Stardust began when Michael Dellar, a restaurateur whose restaurants have earned Michelin stars and James Beard awards, and Mort Friedkin, a developer of prized properties, climbed a hill on Soda Canyon Road after a 20-year vineyard search. Dellar opened The Lark Creek Inn in Larkspur in 1989 and One Market in San Francisco in 1993, both with chef Bradley Ogden, and Friedkin was his first investment partner.

The Dellar & Friedkin Vineyard is 8.3 hillside acres of Clone 4 Cabernet Sauvignon at 250 to 350 feet, planted in 2002 and expanded in 2003, in the Napa Valley AVA beside Atlas Peak, Stags Leap and Oak Knoll. Mario Bazán, once in charge of Opus One and To Kalon vineyards at Robert Mondavi, farms it, and Megan Gunderson makes the wine. Wine Advocate rated the current 2019 at 92+ points.

Stardust ages its wine up to three years in bottle before release, and designer Michael Mabry's label tells a story with monkeys. The wine is sold through the website, the mailing list and restaurants and shops. There is no tasting room, so Stardust does not receive visitors. The day below climbs Soda Canyon Road and Atlas Peak and stops at Bazán Cellars, the family label of Stardust's vineyard manager.
