About the Winery

Southern Roots Wines grew out of a friendship of more than 35 years between two families, the Francises and the O'Neils, who share a love of wine, food and good company. The Francis family moved to Napa in 2004 to grow grapes, and in 2015 Frank O'Neil suggested they make wine together. Their grown children helped choose the name and design the label, and the first rosé followed in 2018.

The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Francis Vineyards in the Coombsville AVA, planted in 2008 in the cool, volcanic bowl east of the city of Napa. The Chardonnay comes from the Truchard Vineyard in Carneros, and the rosé from Napa Valley fruit. Consulting winemaker Rudy Zuidema, whose résumé includes Robert Craig Winery and Ehlers Estate, makes the wines, and the families favor organic and biodynamic farming.

The wines, including a Reserve and an Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and a red blend called The Secret, are sold through the winery's online shop and a two-level wine club with spring and fall shipments. Southern Roots lists no tasting room or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors; the day below takes you to three estates nearby that do.
