Peter Heitz's great-grandparents came from Alsace and in 1904 put down roots on this Calistoga ranch, where they built bonded winery number 130. Five generations on, Peter and Meg Heitz are the winemakers, farming the family's estate vineyard on alluvial soil in the north-west corner of Napa Valley, in the Calistoga AVA. The picking knife on the label belonged to Peter's grandfather.
Shypoke is best known for Charbono, an heirloom grape from the Savoie that the family has grown on the ranch since 1904. The San Francisco Chronicle has written about the Heitzes as keepers of this nearly vanished variety, which they once grew for Inglenook before bottling it themselves. Alongside it come estate Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, and old-vine Grenache and Zinfandel from Mendocino's Poor Ranch.
This is a small family operation with no tasting room. The Napa Wine Project lists it as private, with no public hours or appointments, and the winery's own website offers wine through a downloadable order form, a mailing list and a contact form. For guests who love rare grapes, it is a name to know and to order, and we plan the day at estates nearby that do host.
Shypoke does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Since Shypoke does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Indian Springs and Dr. Wilkinson's, both hot springs resorts on Lincoln Avenue in Calistoga, are about 10 minutes from Storybook Mountain. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 10 minutes away. An organically farmed estate northwest of Calistoga on Highway 128, long celebrated for Zinfandel, where the visit walks the vineyards and 130-year-old caves before a tasting of the current wines. $50, waived with a two-bottle purchase, about 90 minutes. By appointment, Monday to Saturday.
About 10 minutes away. A working horse ranch on Tubbs Lane where you taste stableside in the courtyard, with the horses close by and views of Mount St. Helena and the Palisades. The Courtyard Experience is $50 to $75 and the Cabernet Sauvignon Flight is $125; the length is not published, so we allow about an hour. By reservation; 21 and over.
About 8 minutes away. Lunch at Solbar, the restaurant at Solage in Calistoga, serving lunch Monday through Saturday from 11:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
A few minutes away. A Howell Mountain family, farming at 2,200 feet since 1969, that hosts tastings at its custom crush winery in Calistoga, led by Mike or Brian Lamborn. $75 for current releases, applied toward a six-bottle purchase. By reservation; we confirm the address and time when we book.
Back by about 3:50 p.m., within six hours of pickup.
About $175 to $200 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
Storybook is closed on Sundays and Solbar serves lunch Monday to Saturday, so this day fits Monday to Saturday. Lamborn shares its winery address with the booking.
