About the Winery

ROAM is the small, allocated Napa Valley label of proprietor Mario Roam Sculatti, run with estate director Tyler Neiburger. The winery's own site keeps the story short and lets the vineyards and the bottles speak: Cabernet Sauvignon from two named sites, made in very limited quantities and released to a waiting list.

The two vineyards are Sleeping Lady, in the Yountville AVA, and Xaga, in the St. Helena AVA. The winery quotes 97-point reviews from Joe d'Angelo of the International Wine Report for both 2021 Cabernets. ROAM vintages 2016 through 2021 were made at Wheeler Farms in St. Helena, and the label also lists the Rutherford Wine Vault, on the historic Georges de Latour Vineyard, among its places. Some wines come with privately minted labels or in hand-blown jeroboams.

There is no tasting room and no visit program; the wines are "allocated on a release basis" to those on the waiting list, which you join by emailing the winery. So the day below takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do host, from a candlelit cave to Pritchard Hill and the slopes of Howell Mountain.

The day runs about seven hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · Amulet Estate

About 8 minutes away. A small hillside estate where the St. Helena AVA meets Howell Mountain, in a winery designed by Howard Backen; the private tour walks the vineyards and cellar and ends with current releases in a candlelit cave. The Private Tour & Tasting is $100, at least 90 minutes. By appointment only, for 2 to 12 guests.

12:00 · Lunch at Cook St. Helena

About 10 minutes away. Northern Italian cooking at Cook St. Helena on Main Street, a small local favorite open for lunch Monday to Friday from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

1:25 · David Arthur Vineyards

About 20 minutes away. A family estate high on Pritchard Hill, farmed organically since 1986, about a 15-minute climb up a winding road from the Silverado Trail. The estate tasting is $150, about 90 minutes. By reservation only.

3:15 · Viader Vineyards & Winery

About 20 minutes away. A family estate on the steep lower slopes of Howell Mountain, where a private walk through the hillside vineyard and caves comes before a seated tasting with a view across the valley. The Estate Tasting Experience is $100; we plan about 90 minutes. By appointment, Thursday to Saturday, with a $50 per person deposit.

4:45 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 5:00 p.m., about seven hours after pickup.

About $350 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Viader hosts Thursday to Saturday and Cook serves lunch Monday to Friday, so plan this day for a Thursday or Friday. It runs about seven hours, back by about 5:00 p.m.
