About the Winery
Delia Viader, born in Argentina and educated in Europe with a doctorate in philosophy from the Sorbonne, bought her hillside land in the early 1980s with a loan from her father. She shaped the estate vineyard in 1986, and the first Viader Proprietary Red came from the 1989 vintage. Her son Alan became lead winemaker in 2006, and the winery is still a family business.
The vineyard sits on the steep, rocky volcanic slopes of Howell Mountain's lower western face, in the Crystal Springs of Napa Valley AVA. The flagship blend pairs Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc, which the family calls Liquid Cashmere. Alan added Black Label, the Petit Verdot based V and DARE, a single-varietal Cabernet Franc. The estate is Napa Green certified for both winery and land.
Visits are hosted privately and booked ahead. Your host walks you through the estate, with views of the vineyard and the caves, and then you sit down to taste current releases while looking across the northern end of Napa Valley. Along the way you hear the family's story and how the mountain site shapes the wines.
Tasting Fees
$100 for the Estate Tasting Experience, three estate-grown red blends with a guided walk of the property. $150 for the Cashmere Collector Experience, two vintages of the Viader Proprietary Red plus three current releases.

Alila Napa Valley, a Hyatt luxury resort in St. Helena, is about 12 minutes from Viader, and Harvest Inn, a vineyard-side resort at the south end of St. Helena, is about 15 minutes away. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

About 15 minutes away. A biodynamically farmed estate south of St. Helena whose main tasting salon looks out over the vines. Taste of the Valley is $50 and the Red Room Tasting is $95. By reservation; open Thursday to Monday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

About 10 minutes away. Lunch at Mustards Grill on Highway 29 near Yountville, a Napa Valley institution open daily for lunch. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

About 12 minutes away. A St. Helena winery on Highway 29 whose Taste of Martini flight mixes popular Napa Valley wines with small-lot samplings. The flight is $55 (a cheese board is $15 more); allow about an hour. Reservations recommended; open Thursday to Monday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Adds about an hour. A sparkling wine house on the Silverado Trail in Rutherford, about 12 minutes from Louis M. Martini. Walk-ins are accommodated when space allows, though reservations are recommended; Sip & Sparkle is $48 for 60 minutes. Open daily, last seating at 5 p.m.; all guests must be 21 or over.

Viader books visits Thursday through Saturday, and Raymond and Louis M. Martini are open Thursday through Monday, so plan this day for a Thursday, Friday or Saturday.
