About the Winery

Don Long, a butcher who owned a grocery store in Portola Valley, began buying land on Pritchard Hill in the 1950s and pieced together nearly 1,000 acres. In 1978 he and his son, David Arthur Long, built a small barn and planted vines. David learned the trade through internships at Chappellet, Joseph Phelps and Schramsberg and classes at UC Davis, then founded the winery with Joye Dale in 1985, starting with 30 French oak barrels.

The estate sits in the Vaca Mountains on the east side of the valley, about 1,200 feet above the valley floor, on shallow red volcanic soils. The vineyard has been CCOF certified organic since 1986 and is pruned, thinned and harvested by hand, with picking at night. The Ten Acre block, first planted in 1979, is what the winery calls the oldest producing vineyard on Pritchard Hill, and the Six Acre Elevation Block grows the flagship Elevation 1147 Cabernet Sauvignon.

The family still owns and runs the winery. David's daughter, Laura Long Bystrowski, is general manager, Ted and Paul Bystrowski became partners in 2016, and Nile Zacherle makes the wines. Visits are by reservation only and last about 90 minutes, with views across the valley to the Mayacamas Mountains. Expect small-production wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, the Meritaggio blend and one of Napa Valley's rare Nebbiolo bottlings.

Tasting Fees

$150 for the estate tasting, about 90 minutes. The fee is waived for annual allocation mailing list buyers and one guest.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
