Prothro Family Wines belongs to Bruce and Ronda Prothro, whose first date was a day of wine tasting in Napa Valley. In 1991 they began making wine in their two-car garage in Los Gatos, from Russian River Valley grapes, and over seven harvests they learned from Burt Williams of Williams Selyem and other mentors. They stopped in 1999 to raise their family, and after a 16-year break they launched Prothro Family Wines, made at a winemaking facility in Napa with winemaker Patrick Saboe.
The label debuted with a 2014 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon from Beatty Ranch and a 2016 Yountville Sauvignon Blanc from Morgaen Lee Vineyard. It now sources from Beckstoffer's Melrose and A2 vineyards in Rutherford, Broken Rock and Stagecoach on Atlas Peak, Morgaen Lee in Yountville and a Moon Mountain District Zinfandel site planted in 1886, along with Sonoma Coast Chardonnay and Sonoma Valley Sauvignon Blanc.
The wines are sold only through the Wine Club, the mailing list and invitation-only events; the winery says club membership is the only way to guarantee access. The Napa Wine Project lists Prothro as private, with no appointments or tours. The day below heads to the foot of Atlas Peak, where two of Prothro's Cabernet vineyards climb the slopes, and along the Silverado Trail.
Prothro does not offer tastings. On the day below, expect about $190 per person: $80 at Darioush, $65 at Whetstone and $45 at Hagafen.
Tasting fees as of October 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
