Jamey Whetstone came to Napa from South Carolina in 1996 and learned to make wine at Turley Wine Cellars, where he apprenticed from 1998 to 2005 under Ehren Jordan, with a summer at Domaine Dujac in Burgundy along the way. That apprenticeship gave him the chance to launch Whetstone. His wife Michelle, born and raised in Napa Valley, joined the family winery and shapes the guest experience.
Whetstone is family owned and operated, and it focuses on single-vineyard, single-varietal wines from grower partners, such as its Jon Boat Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley and Walala Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast. Jamey's aim is balance and simplicity in the vineyard and an elegant, approachable style in the bottle.
The setting is the reason to come. Starting in 2011, Michelle led the restoration of a 19th-century French-style chateau on two acres of old oaks at the base of Atlas Peak Road, about 10 minutes from downtown Napa, and it opened as the Tasting Salon in 2013. Guests sit on the sunny patio or fireside inside, and in winter the room is lit by candlelight.
$65 for the Classic Tasting, four single-vineyard, single-varietal wines, 60 to 90 minutes. $135 for the Food & Wine Pairing, the same four wines with savory bites from Blossom Catering Company, 60 to 90 minutes (72 hours' notice). Glass and bottle service is also offered, priced by selection.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
