About the Winery
Ernie and Irit Weir founded Hagafen in 1979 and harvested their first commercial vintage in 1980. In 1986 they bought a few acres on the Silverado Trail for small-lot Cabernet Sauvignon and slowly shaped the property into the estate winery guests visit today. Ernie, known around the winery as Don Ernesto, is still owner, vineyard manager and winemaker; 2024 was his 51st Napa Valley harvest.
Hagafen wines have been served to foreign dignitaries at the White House since 1981, from the Reagan administration onward. The family farms with Napa Green, California Certified Organic Farmers and Bee Friendly Farming among its programs, and some of Irit's artwork hangs on the winery walls.
Every tasting is outdoors, at a private table on the garden patio with the Cabernet vines in front of you, and it starts with a splash of sparkling wine. The mood is easygoing: dogs on leash and families are welcome, and you can bring your own snacks. We like it as a relaxed first stop before a bigger estate.
Tasting Fees
$45 for the Signature Wine Tasting of four rotating wines and $55 for the Reserve Reds tasting of four limited-production Prix Reserve and Don Ernesto wines, each up to an hour and each starting with a splash of sparkling wine. $55 plus a service fee for the Large Party tasting (7 or more).

About 18 minutes away. A Biodynamic estate on the east side of Rutherford, where the Communal Estate Experience begins with a walk through the estate's natural surroundings and sweeping Rutherford views, then a seated tasting of current and library vintages. $125 plus tax, about 90 minutes, shared with one other party (up to 4 guests). By appointment Thursday to Monday.

About 10 minutes away. Lunch at The Charter Oak in St. Helena, a sit-down restaurant open daily from 11:30 a.m. (11 a.m. on weekends). Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

About 10 minutes away. An Oakville estate marked only by a red mailbox, where Tom Gamble himself may be the one pouring. The Signature tasting, a glass of Yountville Sauvignon Blanc and then estate reds in the salon or on the terrace, is $75 for 45 to 60 minutes; fees apply toward wine purchases. By appointment.
