Mount Veeder Winery goes back to Michael and Arlene Bernstein, who planted their first Cabernet on the mountain in 1970; when 59 of the original cuttings took root, the winery says, they knew they were onto something. Encouraged by their friend Robert Mondavi, they founded the winery and became a driving force behind the Mount Veeder AVA. Today the label is owned by Constellation Brands.
The winery farms three ranches between 1,000 and 1,600 feet: the Winery Ranch, where the Bernsteins lived in a Civil War-era cabin; the North Ranch, with views south toward San Francisco Bay; and the steep Rosenquist Ranch. Vines grow on wide terraces cut into the slopes, above the fog, in keeping with the winery's tradition of planting all five Bordeaux varieties. Winemaker John Giannini, who trained under Thomas Rivers Brown, makes the Napa Valley and Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.
The wines are sold on the winery's website and through stores and restaurants, which its Find Locally page lists. Mount Veeder Winery lists no tasting room, tours or visiting hours, so there is no way to visit the ranches. The day below takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do host, two of them on Mount Veeder itself.
Mount Veeder Winery does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Since Mount Veeder Winery does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Andaz Napa, a boutique Hyatt hotel, and Archer Hotel Napa, a boutique hotel with a rooftop bar, are both in downtown Napa, about 35 minutes from Mayacamas on winding mountain roads. The day runs about six and a half hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 35 minutes away. A historic stone winery near the top of Mount Veeder, with vines from about 1,800 to 2,200 feet; its 1971 Cabernet was chosen for the 1976 Judgment of Paris. The Classic estate tour and tasting is $135, about 60 minutes. By prepaid reservation, seven days a week; the winery does not allow ride shares, so private transportation is the way up.
About 20 minutes away. Paul and Betty Woolls's winery on Mount Veeder, surrounded by the 32-acre Woolls Ranch Vineyard, with winemaker Sean Capiaux since the start. The Classic Progeny Tasting of three wines, including a library vintage, is $100, 75 minutes. By prior appointment, seven days a week.
About 20 minutes away. Lunch at Kitchen Door in downtown Napa, a sit-down restaurant on First Street. Lunch runs from 11:30 a.m. on weekdays and from 12:30 p.m. on weekends. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 10 minutes away. The Krupp family's estate at the foot of the Vaca Mountains off the Silverado Trail, pouring wines from their Stagecoach Vineyard, which climbs to 1,900 feet in red volcanic soil. The Estate Tasting of five wines with cheese and charcuterie is $75, daily at 10 a.m., 12:30 and 3 p.m. By appointment.
Back by about 4:25 p.m., just under six and a half hours after pickup.
About $310 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
Mayacamas and Krupp Brothers host daily and Progeny seven days a week, so this day works any day. It runs just under six and a half hours, back around 4:25 p.m.
