Paul and Betty Woolls founded Progeny Winery in 2006. Betty had already built a winery and released her own wines in Oakville; Paul was a lawyer with a long love of wine. They met at a tasting of her wines in Los Angeles in 2003, and the winery's story, as they tell it, is of their lives and vines rooting together on Mount Veeder.
The winery sits in the Mount Veeder AVA, about 15 minutes from downtown Napa, surrounded by the 32-acre Woolls Ranch Vineyard. It is planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon with other Bordeaux varieties and a few Rhône grapes. The first Progeny wine came from Betty's Vineyard, another Woolls vineyard on the mountain. Sean Capiaux has been winemaker since the start.
Every visit is by appointment and seated, in the winery's Hospitality Center with views over the vineyard. Estate chef John Gerber prepares the food for the pairing experiences, and some Progeny wines are sold only to tasting room visitors and the mailing list. Tasting fees are separate from wine purchases.
$100 for the Classic Progeny Tasting of three wines, including a library vintage, 75 minutes. $150 for the Wine and Cheese Pairing Experience or the Reserve Cabernet Library Tasting ($175 with food), each 90 minutes. $175 for the Al Fresco Picnic Tasting, 90 minutes (Thursday to Saturday, May to October). $225 for the Estate Wine and Food Pairing, 90 to 120 minutes.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
