About the Winery
Mithra Winery takes its name and motto from "Soli Invicto Mithrae," an inscription found on ancient Mithraic temples and spoken when offering wine "to the Sun, Invincible Mithra." The winery says its story and its wine share one theme, continuity. Its website carries the name of Aria Mehrabi.
The wine comes from the estate vineyard, Aria Vineyards, in the Mount Veeder AVA, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec on steep mountainside with thin volcanic soil. The current release is the 2016 Mithra Cabernet Sauvignon from blocks A and B: 80% Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec, aged twenty months in French oak, about 80% new. Production was 350 cases.
There is no tasting room. Mithra offers very limited wine by invitation only, through a password-protected Private Invitation page, and anyone can join its Interest List online. The day below takes you to three Mount Veeder estates that do host, from a 1903 stone winery on Redwood Road to an 1889 winery near the top of the mountain.

Since Mithra Winery does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Both hotels are in downtown Napa, about 20 minutes from the first stop on Redwood Road. The day runs about seven hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

About 20 minutes away. The Hess family's Mount Veeder winery in a 1903 stone building. The Estate Tasting is $70, about 90 minutes. Open Thursday to Monday; closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

About 20 minutes away. Lunch at Angèle, a French brasserie on the Napa River in downtown Napa. We confirm hours when we book. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

About 40 minutes away. A mountaintop estate built around an 1889 stone winery high on Mount Veeder. The Classic estate tour and tasting is $135, about 60 minutes, by prepaid reservation.

About 25 minutes away. A family winery on the slopes of Mount Veeder, run by winemaker Jeff Fontanella and his wife Karen. The Fontanella Journey Tasting of four current releases, a barrel sample and a cheese plate is $65, 75 minutes; the last reservation is at 3:30 p.m.

Hess Persson is closed Tuesday and Wednesday, so plan this day for Thursday to Monday. Fontanella's last reservation is at 3:30 p.m., so lunch stays on schedule; the mountain roads are slow, and we allow for them.
