The McCoy family has farmed since 1887, when the first generation settled near Trumbull, Nebraska. John McCoy grew up on a crop and livestock farm, built a career in agricultural manufacturing with Orthman Manufacturing, and first visited Napa Valley in 1991. After years of annual trips, he and his son Jacob chose a hilltop vineyard in the eastern foothills, and the family bought the estate in 2023.
The vineyard rises from 230 to 330 feet above its neighbors in the Vaca foothills, with 12 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and 3 acres of Merlot on rocky, loamy soils with views over the valley. Matt Hardin, a sixth-generation Napa farmer, manages the vines, and Thomas Rivers Brown makes the wine. The first wine, a 2023 Cabernet, was bottled at Mending Wall in June 2025.
The estate itself does not host. Your visit begins at Royal We Wines, the tasting room at the south end of Main Street in St. Helena, with a welcome pour followed by the two current estate wines and a selection of light bites. It is relaxed and personal, and the family's story, from Nebraska roots to Napa vines, is part of the hour.
$75 per guest for the McCoy Family Estates tasting: a welcome pour, the two current estate wines and light bites, 60 to 90 minutes.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
