Rutherford · Napa Valley
An organic, solar-powered family estate on the Rutherford Bench where a private visit walks the vineyard and tours the underground winery caves, and a suggested six-hour day around it.

Shari and Garen Staglin bought this Rutherford Bench estate in 1985, and the family still owns it. The land has been farmed for grapes since John and Mary Steckter planted 60 acres here in the 1860s. In the 1960s, under the eye of André Tchelistcheff, it was replanted for Beaulieu's Georges de Latour Private Reserve, and the Staglins later worked with Tchelistcheff themselves.
The estate covers 61 acres, 51 of them in vines, at the base of the western slopes of Mount St. John in the Rutherford AVA. The vineyard is certified organic, a solar array powers the operation, and the winery itself is underground: a 24,000-square-foot facility of caves completed in 2002, built to keep the wine cool naturally and leave the land above undisturbed.
A visit here is private and unhurried, about 90 minutes. A host walks you briefly through the vineyard, takes you through the underground winemaking caves, and then pours the estate wines while talking about organic farming, winemaking and the family's long philanthropic work. Appointments are limited and members get first access, so we request your date early and arrange it on your behalf.
$150 per guest for the private estate visit: a vineyard walk, a tour of the underground winemaking caves and a tasting of the estate wines, about 90 minutes.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Stay close and the tasting starts right away. About 10 minutes away. A small estate on the hill above Rutherford with a brick-lined cave and the Chandelier Room, lit by Donald Lipski's piece "Chilean Red"; the Valley View Tasting is served in the upstairs salon. The private Valley View Tasting is $125 for 60 to 75 minutes with cheese and charcuterie (no cave tour; the Appellation Exploration at $150 to $175 adds it). Reservations required.
About 15 minutes away. Lunch at The Charter Oak in St. Helena, Christopher and Martina Kostow's family-style New American restaurant, open daily from 11:30 a.m. (11 a.m. on weekends). Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 15 minutes away. A farming family's estate in Oakville, marked only by a red mailbox on Highway 29; the Gambles have farmed in Napa Valley since 1916. The Signature tasting is $75 for 45 to 60 minutes, and the Estate tasting with a vineyard stroll is $150. By appointment only.
Back by about 4:05 p.m., about six hours after pickup.
About $350 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
Staglin books visits Tuesday to Saturday, with members first, so give us as much notice as you can; if the estate offers a different time, we rebuild the rest of the day around it.
