About the Winery
Steve and Jill Matthiasson founded their winery in 2003, coming from sustainable agriculture and the local food movement. It remains independently owned by the family, with no outside partners or investors. Steve is also one of the winemakers at Ashes & Diamonds.
The vineyards are farmed organically, without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, and each vine is touched by hand more than 20 times a year. Alongside Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, the family grows rarer grapes such as Ribolla Gialla and Refosco, aiming for wines with flavor and moderate alcohol. The New York Times has compared them to the best produce from a farmers' market.
Tastings are held outdoors, looking over the family's Phoenix Vineyard and the Oak Knoll District. A dedicated host guides each visit through five or six wines in about 75 minutes. Only a limited number of tastings are offered each day, seven days a week, so it is worth booking well ahead.
Tasting Fees
$75 for the standard tasting of five to six wines and $135 for the Reserve Tasting of single-vineyard Cabernets, small releases and library wines. Tastings run about 75 minutes.

About 10 minutes away. The Laird family's pyramid-shaped winery on Highway 29 at the north edge of Napa. The Veraison Flight of five wines is $50 (complimentary with a $100 purchase); plan on about an hour. By reservation; open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., last tasting at 4.

About 8 minutes away. A small winery on State Lane in east Yountville, with patio tastings that look out to the mountains. The Signature Wine Tasting is $50; we allow about an hour. By appointment only; 21 and over.

Adds about an hour. The Wine & Music Studio on First Street in downtown Napa, from the makers of Butter Chardonnay. Walk-ins are welcome (reservations encouraged), with four tasting options from $45. Open daily from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m., and until midnight Thursday through Saturday.
About $175 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. The fourth stop is there if the day allows.
