About the Winery

Matthew Dempsey, a classically trained pipe organist, set out in 2018 to build a winery around small-lot, blockbuster-style wines, with labels that honor the pipe organ, Mozart's King of Instruments. He taught himself winemaking from textbooks at the University of Michigan, made his first wines in his parents' house from frozen Napa and Sonoma grapes, and took his first Napa job at Trinitas Cellars in 2016.

The wines come from a handful of historic Napa and Sonoma vineyards and age for up to two years in French oak. Recent releases include the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon, a 2021 Reserve Cabernet from Beckstoffer Georges III, The Organist and Cathedral Reserve, Mezzo Piano Pinot Noir and the 2025 Érin go Blánc! Sauvignon Blanc. Since 2018 the wines have been made at Virgil's Vineyard, a small cave winery near Napa.

Production is exceptionally limited, and the bottles are offered only to members of the Allocation List, which you join through the winery's website. There is no tasting room, so Matthew Dempsey Wines does not receive visitors. The day below visits a downtown family label and a Carneros art gallery tasting room, then ends at Trinitas Cellars, where Dempsey got his start in Napa.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:45 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Stanly Ranch or Carneros Resort and Spa.

10:45 · Pickup at Stanly Ranch or Carneros Resort and Spa

Since Matthew Dempsey does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. We pick up at 10:45 because the first room opens at 11. Stanly Ranch, an Auberge resort on a historic Carneros ranch, is about 12 minutes from the first stop, and Carneros Resort and Spa, a cottage resort among the vineyards, about 15 minutes. The day runs about five and a quarter hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

11:00 · Bazán Cellars

About 12 minutes away. A family label from the vineyard manager who once ran To Kalon and Opus One, poured in downtown Napa, with an option to pair the wines with Oaxacan moles. The Tradition Tasting is $60, 45 to 60 minutes. Thursday to Monday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; reservations encouraged.

12:15 · Lunch at Boon Fly Café

About 15 minutes away. Lunch at Boon Fly Café in Carneros, which serves its daytime menu every day until 4 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

1:30 · Ru Vango Winery

About 8 minutes away. A Carneros tasting room and art gallery on the old Carneros Creek Winery site, with Salvador Dalí's Les Chants de Maldoror etchings on the walls. Tastings start at $45; we allow about an hour. Open Monday to Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., last appointments at 4:15 p.m.; walk-ins welcome.

2:45 · Trinitas Cellars

About 12 minutes away. A family winery with a relaxed tasting room beside The Meritage Resort at the southern gateway to the valley, where food pairings can be added to any flight. The seated tasting of signature varietals is $55; we plan about an hour. Open daily; reservations recommended.

3:45 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:00 p.m., about five and a quarter hours after pickup.

About $160 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Bazán is open Thursday to Monday and Ru Vango Monday to Saturday, so plan this day for Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Monday. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
