About the Winery

Paul Maroon (1947-2019) began chasing his dream of a small Napa winery in the late 1990s, drawing on his family's produce business and early winemaking with an uncle in Pennsylvania. He bought the 37 acres in what is now the Coombsville appellation, sold his Cabernet to other wineries for ten years, and made the first commercial Maroon vintage in 2009. In 2022 a longtime collector bought the estate.

The home vineyard lies in a bowl-shaped hollow topped by Mount George, an extinct volcano, where the fog lifts late and the grapes ripen slowly and evenly. Seventeen acres are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon in rocky volcanic soil and gravelly loam. Chris Corley has made the wines since the first vintage and worked with Paul for 20 years, and Katharina Anderson has run operations since 2016.

Maroon sells through its website and the Maroon Wine Club, whose members receive four shipments a year and tastings up to four times a year. There is no public tasting room, so Maroon does not receive visitors. The day below starts with a cellar tour in south Napa, includes a private tasting with Chris Corley himself among the vines, and ends in a cave above the valley.

Tasting Fees

Maroon does not offer public tastings.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Andaz Napa or Archer Hotel Napa.

10:00 · Pickup at Andaz Napa or Archer Hotel Napa

Since Maroon does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Andaz Napa, a boutique Hyatt in downtown Napa, and Archer Hotel Napa, a downtown hotel with a rooftop bar, are each about 12 minutes from the first stop. The day runs about six and a quarter hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · Mi Sueño Winery

About 12 minutes away. Rolando and Lorena Herrera's family winery in south Napa, where a behind-the-scenes tour of the working cellar ends with a seated tasting in the barrel room. The tour with the Dream Flight, five wines with chocolate truffles, is $65; we plan about 75 minutes. By appointment, Monday to Saturday.

11:45 · Chris Corley Wines

About 15 minutes away. Second-generation Napa winemaker Chris Corley and winegrower Julianna Corley pour current and library wines with light bites in the middle of a working vineyard, the vines close enough to touch. The Private Tasting is $75; we allow about 90 minutes. By reservation only, with very limited seatings; the vineyard location is confirmed with the booking.

1:25 · Lunch at Bistro Don Giovanni

About 10 minutes away. Lunch at Bistro Don Giovanni, an Italian restaurant among the vineyards on Howard Lane, a valley favorite for more than 30 years, open daily from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:30 · Greater Fool Wine

About 15 minutes away. A small co-fermented Napa label poured in The Caves at Soda Canyon, an underground winery with a terrace looking down the valley. The cave tour and tasting of four wines plus a barrel sample is $50, about 90 minutes. By appointment, with seatings at 10 a.m., 12:30 and 2:30 p.m.

4:00 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:15 p.m., about six and a quarter hours after pickup.

About $190 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Mi Sueño hosts Monday to Saturday, and Greater Fool seats guests at 10 a.m., 12:30 and 2:30 p.m., so this plan suits Monday to Saturday. The day runs past six hours; extra time is billed by the hour. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
