About the Winery

John Komes came to Napa Valley in 1978, when California had only 66 bonded wineries, and soon helped found the 67th. As partner and president of Flora Springs Winery and Vineyards for decades, he experimented with barrel fermentation, lees stirring and proprietary blends. His son Nat, a Napa native, oversaw operations at Flora Springs for nearly 20 years. Jon Nathaniel, California's 6,967th bonded winery, is their most personal project, named in part as a tribute to John's late son Otto.

The wines come from small parcels the family has owned and farmed for decades in the Rutherford AVA. Windfall Vineyard, owned since 1986, has just 2.2 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and 1.79 acres of Merlot, tightly spaced and organically farmed on rocky loam. From the 30-acre Komes Estate, a sub-block of under six acres beside John's home supplies Cabernet planted in the late 1990s and 2000s.

Jon Nathaniel sells through its website, a wine club with members' events and a mailing list. It publishes no tasting room or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. The day below starts at Flora Springs, the winery John Komes helped found and led for decades, then visits two more estates a short drive away.
