Joseph Phelps's grandson Will Phelps and his wife Amanda, an artist who paints every label, launched this label in 2024 with longtime Phelps winemaker Ashley Hepworth. Hensel West does not receive visitors; here is what to know, and a day at sought-after estates nearby that do host.

Third-generation vintner Will Phelps and his wife Amanda founded Hensel West in 2024. Will grew up in Napa Valley, caught the wine bug during a 2008 harvest in the Rhône, and spent twelve years at his family's winery, learning the traditions shaped by his grandfather, Joseph Phelps. The name honors his father, William Hensel Phelps, and great-grandfather Abel Hensel Phelps.
The wines are made by Ashley Hepworth, who spent fifteen years at the helm of Joseph Phelps Vineyards. Fruit comes from growers who sold to Will's grandfather for decades, including the Bettinellis' Sleeping Lady Vineyard in Yountville, Steltzner Vineyard below the Stags Leap palisades and Hyde Vineyards in Carneros for Syrah. Amanda paints an original work of art for each wine's label.
Hensel West sells through its mailing list and online shop and publishes no tasting room or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. The day below starts at Hyde Vineyards Estate, the family vineyard whose Syrah goes into Hensel West, and takes you to two more sought-after estates that host.
Hensel West does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Carneros Resort and Spa or Stanly Ranch.
Since Hensel West does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Carneros Resort and Spa and Stanly Ranch, an Auberge resort among the Carneros vines, are each about 5 to 10 minutes from the first stop. The day fits about six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 8 minutes away. Larry Hyde's Carneros vineyard, planted in 1979 and long a source for other wineries, now pouring its own Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on a vineyard terrace. The estate tasting is $75, about 75 minutes. Open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. by reservation.
About 15 minutes away. A private tasting salon upstairs in a historic downtown Napa building, pouring Beckstoffer and other pedigreed-vineyard Cabernets among the barrels. Into the Cellar is $150 with artisanal food pairings; we allow about 90 minutes. By reservation.
About 10 minutes away. Lunch at Bistro Don Giovanni, an Italian restaurant among the vineyards on Howard Lane, a valley favorite for more than 30 years, open daily from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 8 minutes away. A Napa Valley family winery since 1972, rooted in a hillside vineyard first planted in the 1870s, pouring at the family home on the Silverado Trail. The Estate Experience is $75 for four current releases; we allow about an hour. Booked and prepaid on Tock.
Back by about 4:10 p.m., a little over six hours after pickup.
About $300 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
Simon Family Estate sets its hours when you book, and we fit the rest of the day around them. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.
