About the Winery

The Burgess story starts on the slopes of Howell Mountain above St. Helena, where vines were first planted in the 1870s and Giovanni and Elva Poncetta built a stone gravity-flow winery in 1892. Lee Stewart made wine there as Souverain from 1943. In 1972 Tom Burgess, a former Air Force pilot, founded Burgess Cellars on the property, and winemaker Bill Sorenson made 41 consecutive vintages.

The Lawrence family bought Burgess in 2020, and Meghan Zobeck became the winemaker. The historic hillside vineyard, now called Sorenson Vineyard, sits at 800 to 1,000 feet in Deer Park on volcanic ash soils, inside the Crystal Springs of Napa Valley AVA, approved in 2024. Burgess also farms St. Andrews and Quartz Creek in the Oak Knoll District and Clos Abeille in St. Helena.

In 2021 Burgess moved its home to a property on the Silverado Trail in Napa, so guests taste there rather than up on the mountain. Every visit is by appointment. The Estate Experience pours four current releases, with a cheese and charcuterie plate available, and The Founder's Experience is held in The Founder's Room with older vintages of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Tasting Fees

$75 for The Estate Experience, four current releases (a cheese and charcuterie plate is $25 more). $150 for The Founder's Experience, with older vintages of Cabernet Sauvignon and cheese and charcuterie. $350 for the Vineyard Immersion Experience, a private vineyard tour by Lexus SUV with single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
