About the Winery

Bob Hartwell moved to Napa Valley in the 1980s and bought a hilltop on Wappo Hill in what is now the Stags Leap District; the land and home had belonged to Charles "Harry" See, founder of See's Candy. In 1986 he planted two acres of Cabernet Sauvignon from cuttings of the Bosche clone he got from his friend Dick Grace of Grace Family Vineyard, and 1990 was the first vintage.

The early Hartwell Estate Vineyards wines were made at the Grace winery, and the first labels even carried Grace's "G" logo. Over time Bob and Blanca Hartwell added two parcels lower on the hill, with the winery and most of the vineyard. From 2006 the wines were made by Benoit Touquette, who later became the winemaker at Realm Cellars.

Realm Cellars bought the main parcel and winery at the end of 2015, and after Bob and Blanca Hartwell died in the late 2010s, the family sold Realm the hilltop in October 2020. The Hartwell label's website is no longer active, and the old estate does not receive visitors as Hartwell. The two-acre hilltop block now goes into Realm's Hartwell XX, made since the 2018 vintage.
