About the Winery

David and Christine Hardten started Hardten Family Vineyards in 2019, after years of visiting Napa Valley and learning what makes a great Cabernet Sauvignon. Their winemaker is Patrick Saboe, Director of Winemaking at Foundry Wines and a consultant to several Napa and Sonoma brands.

The estate is 8.5 acres of clone 7 Cabernet Sauvignon on a sun-facing hillside in the Atlas Peak AVA, about 1,500 feet up, above the morning fog, on mineral-rich volcanic soil. Three acres were replanted in 2021 and another 1.5 acres planted in 2023. The family also sells grapes to other Napa wineries, and rents out a renovated barn with views of Atlas Peak by the month.

The first two wines, the 2019 First Reserve and Dinner Belle Cabernets, sold out; the current wine is the 2023 Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 26 months in French oak. Hardten sells through its website and publishes no tasting room or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. The day below stays in the eastern hills at three estates that do host.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Silverado Resort or Milliken Creek Inn.

10:00 · Pickup at Silverado Resort or Milliken Creek Inn

Since Hardten does not host visitors, this day takes you to three sought-after estates nearby that do. Silverado Resort, at the foot of Atlas Peak, is about 10 minutes from the first stop on Atlas Peak Road, and Milliken Creek Inn, on the Napa River off the Silverado Trail, about 15 minutes. The day fits about six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · Aequitas Vineyards

About 10 minutes away. Amy Ash's small, rocky Cabernet vineyard on Atlas Peak Road, looking out over Silverado and the valley. Fees to be verified upon reservation; by appointment or private request with the proprietor, and we allow about an hour.

11:35 · McKahn Wines

About 15 minutes away. A family making Rhône varieties in Cabernet country, with private tastings in a hillside cave at Soda Canyon. The private tasting is $85 with a cheese plate, about 90 minutes. Requested at least 48 hours ahead.

1:20 · Lunch at Oenotri

About 15 minutes away. Lunch at Oenotri on First Street in downtown Napa, known for pizza, house-made salumi and Southern Italian cooking. Lunch is served daily from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:40 · Eleven Eleven Winery

About 8 minutes away. A women-owned urban winery minutes from downtown Napa, with a stylish tasting room, a zen patio and single-vineyard wines by Kirk Venge. The 11:11 Experience is $75, a private seated tasting of about 75 minutes. Open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. by appointment on Tock.

3:55 · Back to your hotel

Back by about 4:10 p.m., a little over six hours after pickup.

About $160 per person in published tasting fees for McKahn and Eleven Eleven, plus Aequitas's fee, which is confirmed upon reservation. Fees are paid directly to each winery.

Aequitas and McKahn both confirm requests personally, so we book early and adjust the order to their times. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
